The Heartsaver AED (HS-AED) course is a comprehensive Basic Life Support course specifically designed to teach lay rescuers to deal with a life-threatening emergency. The course covers Adult & Child CPR and ventilation with a pocket face shield or a resuscitation face mask, and Adult & Child Choking.

It also teaches the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This modular type of training programme is designed to promote a flexible approach to widespread lay rescuer training.

The HS-AED course is recommended for lay rescuers who could be called upon to deal with a life-threatening emergency.

COURSE DETAILS
 
 

TARGET AUDIENCE
It is intended for all lay rescuers but is particularly suitable for those who are expected to respond to emergencies in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and pre-hospital settings.

These lay rescuers may include (but are not limited to) Occupational First Aiders, Qualified Lifeguardds, Firefighters, Military Personnel, Garda Siochana, Electricity and Power-Generation Workers, First Responders, Postal Workers, Commercial Airline Crews, Security Personnel, Golf Club Members and Staff, Family Members of High-rish Patients, Sports Coaches, Banking Staff and other lay rescuers who have access to an AED.

TIME FRAME
This 3-4 hour programme involves multiple learning activities, Instructor & DVD-led skills demonstration and practice sessions that include:
• One-rescuer Adult CPR
• One-rescuer Child CPR
• Use of resuscitation face masks & face shields
• Adult & Child recovery position
• Adult & Child choking (conscious and unconscious)
• AED Introduction
• Safe and effective use of an AED
• Skills group practice
• Skills testing

INSTRUCTOR & DVD-LED PRESENTATIONS
• How to make the emergency call
• AED special situations and safety
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
• Actively participate in, practice and complete all skills.
• Demonstrate competence in performance on manikins using the American Heart Association's critical skills checklists while performing the following skills...
• Adult & Child One-rescuer CPR
• Adult & Child One-rescuer CPR with the AED
INSTRUCTORS
Our Instructors come from an Irish healthcare setting and all remain in day-to-day clinical practice. They are regarded as experts in their field and have a proven ability to teach. CODE BLUE is a registered and approved Irish Heart Foundation / American Heart Association training site. Course certificates are only issued to approved and registered training sites where the currently certified Instructors carry full public and professional liability insurance.
CERTIFICATION
Participants who successfully complete the course, including the skills evaluation,
will receive an American Heart Association / Irish Heart Foundation Heartsaver-AED provider course completion card (credential). This accreditation is recognised in over 50 countries throughout the world.

SKILLS MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL
The Irish Heart Foundation/American Heart Association recommend a 2 year renewal interval for all who complete the Heartsaver-AED Provider course.
