The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Course provides the participant with a safe, reliable method for immediate management of the injured patient, including assessment, resuscitation and transfer to higher level/specialist care.

Delivered by experts in Trauma Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and General Surgery, the course focuses on a hands-on approach to the most common and most serious injuries, including chest trauma, spinal injuries, facial trauma and skeletal trauma.

Certified by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the American College of Surgeons, ATLS Training is an essential component of Higher Specialist Training for surgery, orthopaedics, emergency medicine and anaesthesia.

COURSE DETAILS
 
 

TARGET AUDIENCE
It is intended for participants who provide advanced care to injured patients as part of the hospital trauma team. Suitable candidtes include (but are not limited to) SpR, Registrar and SHO level doctors from Trauma Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesia.


TIME FRAME
This 3-day programme involves multiple learning activities. Instructor-led skills demonstration and practice sessions that includes:
  • Initial Assessment and triage
  • Airway management
  • Cricothyroidotomy
  • Shock management
  • Femoral, IO, Cut-down access
  • Thoracic trauma
  • Needle/tube thoracostomy
  • Abdominal trauma
  • Head trauma
  • Spinal injury/immobilisation
  • Musculoskeletal trauma

PHYSICIAN LED PRESENTATIONS

  • Transfer to definitive care
  • Mechanism of injuries
  • Burns

 

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

  • Actively participate in, practice, and complete all skills and learning stations
  • Demonstrate effective skills and team management during a simulated trauma case (Moulage)
  • Pass a written post-course MCQ
INSTRUCTORS
Our Instructors come from an Irish healthcare setting in fields such as Trauma Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics.
CERTIFICATION
We issue an ATLS Certificate form the RCSI. We also issue a certificate of attendance signed by the course Medical Director.
INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Participant-Instructor ratio 3:1(max)

SKILLS MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL
It is recommended to renew certification on a 2 yearly basis.
PRE-COURSE WORK
Particiapants are encouraged to read the ATLS textbook supplied approximately 3 weeks before the course.
COURSE EQUIPMENT
Code Blue own and supply all their own training equipment. We provide higher than normal manikin to Instructor ratios on our courses allowing participants additional skill practice time.
