Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) training provides a structured learning environment for multi-disciplinary groups to develop the skills, teamwork, and organisation necessary to effectively manage paediatric emergencies.

The APLS course, designed by the American Academy of Paediatrics, is ideal training for those who work in paediatrics and who manage paediatric emergencies on a regular basis.

The course is run by Code Blue under license form the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG) in the UK

COURSE DETAILS
 
 

TARGET AUDIENCE
It is intended for healthcare professionals who work in paediatrics and who manage paediatric emergencies on a regular basis.

These candidates may include (but are not limited to) Consultants, Registrars, Senior House Officers, Clinical Nurse Managers and nurses.

TIME FRAME

The course has two components.

Online learning

This comprises a series of tutorials and quizzes which cover a theoretical aspects of the APLS course.

2-day Face-to-Face

This involves multiple learning activities including lectures, small-group discussions and skills workshops covering:

  • Primary and secondary paediatric assessment
  • Recognition of respiratory distress/failure
  • Airway management and ventilation
  • Needle thoracocentesis, chest drain, surgical airway
  • Recognition of shock
  • IV/IO access and fluid resuscitation
  • Basic life support
  • Newborn resuscitation
  • Electrical therapy/Defibrillation
  • Spinal injury/immobilisation
 

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

  • Actively participate in, practice, and complete all skills and learning stations
  • Score a minimum grade (84% or higher) on the final Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper.
  • Demonstrate competency in patient assessment and management in a simulated paediatric emergency case (Megacode)
  • Complete the Pre-Course Online component (VLE)

 

INSTRUCTORS
Our Instructors come from an Irish healthcare setting and all remain in day-to-day clinical practice. They are regarded as experts in their field and have a proven ability to teach. CODE BLUE is a registered and approved ALSG training site. Course certificates will only be issued to approved and registered training sites where the currently certified Instructors carry full public and professional liability insurance.
CERTIFICATION
Participants, who successfully complete the course,
including the written examination and skills evaluation,
will receive an ALSG APLS Certificate.
INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Participant-Instructor ratio 8:3(max)

SKILLS MAINTENANCE AND RENEWAL
The American Association of Paediattrics recommend that APLS certifcation be renewed every 4 years.
ONLINE PRE-COURSE TUTORIALS
The online component of the course MUST be completed before attendance at the face-to-face component. This is mandatory. If you do not complete the online component, you may only observe the face-to-face component and will NOT receive an APLS certificate. The online component CANNOT be completed AFTER the face-to-face component. These rules are set by ALSG.
COURSE EQUIPMENT
Code Blue own and supply all our own training equipment. We provide higher than normal manikin to Instructor ratios on our courses allowing participants additional skill practice time.
